Building a house is in the top 5

of life stressors that one can experience

Here is a group of people called Habitat for Humanity who voluntarily experience this stress on a regular basis, not for themselves, but for others.  For people who cannot do it for themselves.  Habitat people put themselves on the front lines of the housing crisis and do their best to confront the difficulties that arise through every project.  I think they do pretty darn well.

We are all Brothers and Sisters in this world.  When we take the time and effort to see into each other’s hearts, to reach out, to see humanity as a whole rather than divided by skin color, religious affiliations, economic status, gender or orientation, it results in the willingness and determination to make a difference.  Habitat for Humanity of Martha's Vineyard is making a difference.

It has long been a life goal of mine to be able to really SEE people, see into their hearts to feel what they need and to give it to them.  Not material things, but a word, a gesture that makes that person feel understood and loved for who they really are, not their superficial persona, but their true essence.  In receiving the opportunity to build or renovate a Habitat house I feel seen, I feel valued for whom I am and for my contribution to the community and to the world.

As a Habitat recipient, it is going to take me a really long time to show you all how grateful I am and how much of a difference you have made for my family.  It is going to take years and years.

WHAT’S GOING ON IN THE WORLD OF HABITAT FUNDRAISING?

What a whirlwind of a year 2005 is proving to be!  Our first event planned was the House Walk which was scheduled for the Saturday of Mother’s Day Weekend, May 7, 2005.  The event was well publicized and all the public schools were in great support of our efforts!  Since small children can’t always help out at the build site due to legalities, participating in the Walk would have been a way for them to get involved with Habitat in some capacity.  Many of the school-aged children had planned to walk with their families, friends and classes!  It would have been so well attended and we anticipated making close to $15,000, as this event has been very lucrative in the past!  Out of all the 365 days in the year, our event was scheduled for the very day when a MAJOR Nor’easter hit the Vineyard.  Violent waves cascaded over the ocean walls directly on the path where the Walk was to have taken place from Oak Bluffs to Edgartown!  Between the severe winds and squalls of rain, the event was literally a washout!  And while we had advertised the event as taking place “Rain or Shine”, we never mentioned anything about Nor’easter or Shine!  So as you can surmise, this event was a non-event, yet many still donated in spite of the weather.  Thank you.

Fortunately, things started looking more hopeful with the events that followed.  On Friday evening, May 27, we held our third “Art and More Auction” at the Harbor View Hotel in Edgartown.  Months of hard work culminated in an evening of fun and financial rewards!  The night would never  have been as successful as it was without the genuine benevolence shown by the community: hundreds of artists and businesses generously contributed pieces sold at both the live and silent auctions, patrons opened their wallets graciously and volunteers worked tirelessly to make the evening a great success!  Coincidentally, it also rained at this event but this time (and since it was indoors), our efforts were not hampered!                                                    Above right is Bob Glover,  our Auctioneer for the event

Signing a shingle at the Family Fun Day

Following the Art and More Auction, we sponsored a joint venture with two other affordable housing organizations: the Island Affordable Housing Fund (Houses on the Move) and the Island Housing Trust. Together we held a Family Fun Day at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School.  Once again the day initially looked ominous (weather-wise) and rain had been forecast for the day.  We decided to not cancel the event and thankfully so, as the day was a great success.  The intent behind this day was threefold: to bring the community together for a day of fun, to inform the public of the need for affordable housing and to showcase the build site of the next Habitat Home.  As nominal fees were charged and many of the activities were free, it wasn’t an ultra profit-making venture.  However, it was a wonderful public awareness event and a truly great day was had by all.

Lots of activities were enjoyed by the entire family.

Would you like to make a difference in your community?

If you are looking for a way to gain a greater sense of purpose and a way to give back to the community in which you reside or visit, why not consider getting involved with Habitat for Humanity of Martha’s Vineyard?  Our work is done with the generosity of spirit from individuals like yourself.  We are looking for volunteers, professional and novice, to assist in our current build.  Just give us a call and we will definitely have a way for you to get involved:  508.696.4646.

WHAT’S NEXT?

As Summer 2005 nears its end, Habitat is delighted to bring Lorraine Graves and Friends” featuring principal dancers from the Dance Theatre of Harlem to the Island for an evening of ballet and more!  This event has been generously underwritten by Morgan Stanley and an anonymous donor, so this is a grand opportunity for our organization to raise a lot of money for our next build.  Tickets are $40 in advance and $45 at the door.  Seniors and students are $30 in advance and $35 at the door. Premier seating is available for $100 per ticket which includes a post-performance reception with the dancers.  Turn to the back page of this newsletter for further specifics.  If you are unable to attend this event perhaps consider purchasing tickets for someone who might not be able to afford to attend otherwise and we will happily contribute these on your behalf.

While all of us at Habitat for Humanity of Martha’s Vineyard greatly appreciate the support of your efforts, know that your generosity is most directly felt by the families for whom your contributions provide housing!

Thank you for all you do and we hope to see you at the dance performance on the 18th of August!

TWIN OAKS COMES BACK

All our fundraising efforts lead to our premier event ~ the building of our next house, “Twin Oaks” for the Miller/Schackman family, located in Oak Bluffs near the four-way stop at Barnes and Airport Roads.  Below is a portion of the house being demolished (this is Habitat’s first renovation), followed by a rendering of the house as it will be transformed.

Words from the children of the Twin Oaks home.

YOUR OWN HOUSE

If you have your own house

You don’t have to move out,

There isn’t all kinds of junk in the closets that isn’t yours,

And you can paint the walls whatever color you want to.

You can do whatever you want in your room,

Like put stickers everywhere and put posters up.

In the yard you could make a basketball court

Or get a trampoline.

A PLACE TO BE

Living, existing, breathing,

A place to be yourself

And call home.

No more moving out every summer;

Your room is your room.

No more having to see

Your mother stressing out

About how many boxes we need,

Or what goes where.

Because of our own house

Summer is a time to

Sleep in our own beds,

And sun bathe in our backyard.

It is a time to just enjoy the sun.
